![]() ![]() Some people like the notebooks to work left-to-right, so the input (information) side is on the left and the output (student thinking) side is on the right. I like the visual reminder that students are stopping to back up and think about the new learning. I like to set up my notebooks with the input (information) side on the right and the output (student thinking) side on the left. Science Interactive Notebook: click HERE for the phases of the moon wheel Here's an example of what my notebooks look like: Some activities include: graphic organizers, foldables/flip-flap activities, problem solving, written reflections or opinions, or illustrations. Students use thinking strategies to "interact" with the new information. This is where the word "interactive" comes into play. It allows the students to take the new information from the input side and apply it in their own way to demonstrate understanding of the new content. It can include class notes, notes from a reading or class discussion, handouts, graphic organizers, or visuals (diagrams, charts, graphs, etc.). It includes the new information the students are learning for the lesson. I call this the Information Side or the Learning Side. Interactive notebooks are divided into two parts: Interactive notebooks differ from traditional note taking, in that they allow students to stop and interact with the new information and receive feedback from the teacher and classmates about their understanding of the new information, instead of just copying down notes from a book or the board and having no clue what they're writing. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notebook assignments from either a classmate or the teacher.An interactive notebook is a place where students can take information supplied from the teacher and merge it with their own thinking. Mostly it is checked on being complete but the left sides must be varied and not be a simple restatement or a picture with no processing of content from the right side. Each right side assignment must be complete, have a heading, and the date assigned or given written on it. ![]() This includes each being recorded in the table of contents. All class notes and assignments should be included, even for the days you were absent. Notebooks will be checked periodically and these checks will not be announced. In the back of the notebook, you will create a glossary of terms for the year. Each section will have a cover page and then all the activities and assignments for that unit. The ISN is divided into units of study based on our World History curriculum. Reorganize new information in creative formats These activities will either PREVIEW or PROCESS new information. Students explore their opinions and clarify values on issues, wonder about “what if” hypothetical situations and ask questions about new ideas. Students work out an understanding of the material by using illustrations, diagrams, or flow charts. The left side of the notebook is the “output” side or the student side, primarily used for processing new information. Typically, all “testable” information will be found here. It contains the key information for the unit such as class notes, t-charts, and graphs. The right side of the notebook is the “input” side or the teacher side. We divide the notebooks into two different sides: left side activities and right side activities. The interactive notebooks encourage students to record information in an organized fashion. The notebook is 30% of your entire grade. ![]() This notebook will be a valuable resource in preparing for tests. This notebook is different from traditional notebooks due to the fact that it provides activities for a variety of learning styles catering to Multiple Intelligences, and tasks all geared to how our brains learn best. As you work with the notebook, it becomes a portfolio for your work thoughts and beliefs. Interactive notebooks will be used for class notes, as well as for other activities where students will be asked to express their own ideas and process information presented in this class. The ISN enables students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. ![]()
